Be clothed with ChristBy Matt Gwinn, Children's Minister, Carver Road Baptist, GriffinPublished June 9, 2005
In the business world, the best equipped person to handle your books is an accountant. The best person to supervise employees is someone with management skills. The person who has people skills will best help sell the services for a business. But is this the same way for the spiritual world? Are the only people that can witness to bikers, other bikers? The sublime message in the article "Get Your Motor Running" is that unless you look, talk, or act the same as someone else who is lost, you are not the best to witness to that person. I was joking with a friend of mine that I needed to dress up like a clown, so that I could witness to all the lost clowns. That way, I would look like them, be able to talk their lingo, and thus, make a connection. But in this new movement of "hobby ministry" there are two things that we can't forget. One, we " are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. When we were crucified with Christ, the old man died. Then, when He rose again, we rose with Him, a new man. A new man in Him. Does Christ use our attributes from our old life for His glory? Sure. But we have to make sure that it doesn't become a crutch or the way we define ourselves. With or without leatherjackets and bikes, we should be able to go to any fellowship of believers and feel comfortable to worship. We should be able to go up to any person, whether that person is in a suit and tie or tattoos, and share the gospel. Second, Jesus has given us the power to witness to anyone, no matter the clique. "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." It is not our clothes, or our hobby, or what profession that needs to define our power in witnessing, but that of Christ. Christ has led us all up to this point in our lives. He will use whatever necessary means He sees fit to reach the lost. But the vehicle which drives us to share our faith and the Truth with others must not be our worldly likes, but the love that God showed us. That love that He showed by sending His Son to die for us. The vehicle that is used must be that that glorifies His name. May we remember to let Him be our covering, and not a leather jacket. |
