Roy Marvin Dean Jr., pastor of Bikers - The Church at First Baptist Jonesboro, died June 18. He was 51. Dean was a member of the staff at First Baptist Jonesboro. He is survived by his son, John Caleb Dean; two brothers; a sister and mother. The biker church will continue meeting on Fridays at 7 p.m. on First Jonesboro's campus. Waldo P. Harris, III died July 2 at Wills Memorial Hospital in Washington following a struggle with leukemia. He was 84. Harris was a native of Wilkes County. He held degrees from Brewton Parker College, Mercer University, and Southern Seminary and served Georgia Baptist churches in Bartow, Broxton, Atlanta, and Lakeland. In 1969 Harris began a 17-year term as associational missionary for the Georgia Baptist Association. He was known as the "Historian of Georgia Baptists" and at his suggestion the 200-year-old history of the Georgia Baptist Association was written. Harris served as vice chair for the Southern Baptist Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention and as a board member of the Southern Baptist Historical Society. For two terms he served as chair of the History Committee of the Georgia Baptist Convention and was a member for almost twenty years in addition to serving 28 years as secretary-treasurer for the Georgia Baptist Historical Society. Up until his death Harris was president emeritus of the Penfield Christian Home and a member of Kiokee Baptist Church in Appling. Harris was editor and author of several publications. Currently in production are Reflections, Recollections and Refreshing Stories and History of Penfield Christian Home, a home for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts - of which he was a contributing founder. In 1991 Harris was awarded for "Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Georgia Baptist History" by the Georgia Baptist Convention. He is survived by his wife, Carol Corbett, and three grandchildren, all of Fitzgerald. In addition, he is survived by his daughter, Mary Anne of Milwaukee; brothers Joseph B. Harris of Washington; John S. Harris of Pelham, Ala.; and Thomas M. Harris of Brandon, Miss.; and sisters Ruth E. Harris and Jane L. Wright, both of Washington. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel McKinnon of Macon, and brothers W. Henry Harris and J. Robert Harris. |
