Charles "Bo" Turner, pastor of Tallulah Falls Baptist Church, died July 16 at his home in Clarkesville. He was 72. Turner was known around north Georgia for his philanthropy and outspoken opposition to the mix of politics and religion. He was especially vocal in his opposition of the placement of the Ten Commandments display in Habersham County. For two years, Turner successfully battled the county over the issue with support from the American Civil Liberties Union. Turner was unconventional by some standards. He rode a motorcycle and carried a tattoo that read, "Jesus was a liberal." He celebrated his 25th anniversary with the Tallulah Falls church in March. A military veteran and graduate of Piedmont College, Turner is survived by his wife, Emma, three sons and seven grandchildren.
Bill Perry, former staff member at Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, died July 19 in Richmond, Va. from cancer. He was 51. A native of Clarke County, Perry served as orchestra director and middle school choir director of the church from January 1993 to December 2004. In January he joined Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Va. as associate minister of music. Perry is survived by his wife of 29 years, Connie. In addition he is survived by his son, Matthew, and daughter, Elisabeth, both of Winder. |
