The Passion of Christ draws crowds in Jordan

(RNS) The Passion of the Christ made its Middle East debut in Amman, Jordan on March 16 with crowds of Christians and Muslims flocking to see the film.

Amman’s moviegoers said they were thoroughly impressed with the portrayal of Jesus’ trial and death on the cross, with many saying it was the best film they had ever seen.

A mixture of religious devotion and plain curiosity drew nearly 1,000 Jordanians and Gulf Arabs to the Grand Theater’s opening of The Passion. Women shrouded from head to foot in black and those wearing distinctive gold crosses joined youths in jeans and baseball caps to watch the depiction of the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life.
