Getting the school year off to the right start

We have a small private school here in Pinehurst and our church started a prayer breakfast in our social hall on Friday mornings about ten years ago. I believe the first breakfast had four students. We began this school year with our first breakfast on August 19 – and, praise God, we had 80 people to attend.

Our format is simple: We come in at 7 a.m. and have the blessing and then the students, teachers, and even some parents enjoy a hearty, hot breakfast. Then we have a praise time when the children have a chance to share something that they really want to praise God about.

After taking prayer requests I begin to pray and then we open the floor and that’s when the real blessing begins as God gives courage to these kids that pray with all their peers in attendance. You should hear some of the heartfelt prayers that come from these young men and women.

I then present a short devotional and we close in prayer and the children leave and have plenty of time to get to school by 8:05.

The church provides the facilities, the cups, plates and utensils, but all the food is supplied through donations from parents and friends of Fullington Academy. We have different teams to cook every week – some are parents, some are civic organizations – but many are just people who love kids and want to be a part of this great ministry.

Some of these children are unchurched, and this may be the only exposure to God’s word they receive. I thank God for our church’s passion for this ministry, and for those who cook, or make donations to keep this ministry alive.

Our school is 4K through twelfth grade and we have approximately 270 students. The breakfast is open to all grades, teachers, parents, or anyone who wants to stop by.

I thank God that we are reaching people with the gospel of Jesus Christ through the prayer breakfast ministry of our church.
