William T. “Terry” McDaniel of Fairburn died Aug. 10. He was 58.

McDaniel was a graduate of Southwestern Seminary. His pastorates included Jermyn First Baptist Church and Southwest Baptist Church in Jacksboro, both in Texas. For the past ten years he served as pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Fairburn.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, Eric McDaniel of Dallas, Texas and Matthew McDaniel of Rome; and two grandchildren.

 

Nancy Belle Woolley Johnston of Macon, wife of retired professor of Bible at Mercer University Edwin D. Johnston, Sr., died at home on July 27. She was 88.

A native of Brent, Ala., Johnston was a graduate of Blue Mountain College in Mississippi and the Woman’s Missionary Union Training School at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. She held a master’s degree in religious education and served as director of religious education at First Baptist Church in Phenix City, Ala.

Johnston served in various leadership roles of Baptist women and the Woman’s Missionary Union. She also taught English as a second language to Vietnamese and Japanese women for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edwin D. Johnston, Sr.; a daughter, Gwen Weston of Macon; sons, Eddie Johnston of Rome and David Johnston of Forsyth; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Johnston was a member at Ingleside Baptist Church in Macon.

 

Georgia Baptist pastor and missionary George Vail Deadwyler, Jr. of Clarkesville died Aug. 4 following a battle with cancer. He was 73.

Deadwyler, a native of Elberton, earned degrees from Mercer University and Southwestern Seminary. He was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in 1961 in the Air Force Reserve and served as chaplain during the Cuban Crisis and the Pueblo Crisis. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1983 after 23 years of service.

Deadwyler served as fulltime pastor at Ridgeland Heights Baptist Church in Sandersville, Calvary Baptist Church in Rome, First Baptist Church in Dawson, and Bethlehem Baptist Church in Clarkesville. Following these pastorates, he and his wife, Betty, were appointed as missionaries by the North American Mission Board in 1989.

Deadwyler’s years of service in Baptist life also included consultant for the Georgia Baptist Convention in Church and Community Missions, trustee of Truett McConnell College in Cleveland and trustee of the North American Mission Board.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Whitehead of Clarkesville, daughters, Kathy Cook of Greenville, S.C.; Karen Edwards of Griffin; and Sharon Dennis of Birmingham, Ala.; a son, Tommy Deadwyler of Sautee-Nacoocheem; and grandchildren.
