Through the generosity of several benefactors, Music & Worship Ministries of the Georgia Baptist Convention was able to award 13 scholarships at the 2005 Youth II Music Camp held June 12-18 at the Georgia Baptist Convention Center in Norman Park.
Mark Bailey, a member of First Baptist Lithia Springs; Caroline Foster, a member of First Baptist Griffin and Ben Fowler, a member of First Baptist Bremen were awarded the W.A. Anderson Scholarship. Bailey is majoring in church music at Baylor University, while Foster is a music major in vocal performance at Brewton-Parker College and Fowler a music education major at the University of Mobile.
The Constance Ashby Via Scholarship was awarded to Elise Ivey, a member of First Baptist Fayetteville who will major in music education at North Greenville Christian College in Tigerville, S.C.
When Paul McCommon retired in 1985 as director of the Church Music Department, a scholarship was established in his name. This year’s recipients of the McCommon Scholarship are Holly Alderman, a member of First Baptist Alma, and David Chapman, a member of Briarlake Baptist in Decatur. Alderman will attend South Georgia College and major in nursing. Chapman will attend Georgia Perimeter College majoring in math education.
A scholarship from the Georgia Baptist Church Music Conference is awarded also at Youth II Music Camp each year to a camper who plans to enroll in a college or university as a music major. The GBCMC scholarship for 2005 went to Sally Hawkins, a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Snellville who will major in vocal performance at Georgia Southern University.
Of the thirteen scholarships, six went to music campers to help pay the cost of attending 2006 Baptist All-State. One such award is made possible by a fund set up in the name of Martha Settle, a long-time employee of the Church Music Department. Tori Bryant, a member of First Baptist Calhoun, was the winner of the Martha Settle Scholarship for 2005.
Four scholarships for 2006 Baptist All-State were awarded this year in memory of Linda Sue Milam. Justin Maxey, First Baptist Winder; Julie Powell, First Baptist Fairburn; Mary Freeburg, Central Baptist Newnan and Michael Loredo, First Baptist Blackshear were awarded these scholarships.
The Andy Voyles Memorial Music Camp Scholarship was established in memory of a long-time music camper who was killed as a result of a car accident in February 2003. This scholarship was awarded to Andrew Coody, a member of Jefferson Avenue Baptist in East Point.
The Via, Anderson, Settle, Voyles and McCommon Funds are managed by the Georgia Baptist Foundation.
A Faculty Commendation award was presented to Alayna Guest, a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church in Griffin.
Trey English, Mt. Zion Baptist Macon, and Margaret Van Gorder, Salem Baptist McDonough, were chosen by the 2005 faculty to receive the Henry Nealon Morgan scholarship. This scholarship is provided to honor the life and memory of Henry Nealon Morgan of Columbus and covers the cost of attending 2006 music camp.
The Youth I Faculty Commendation Award was presented to Kayla Woodfin, a member of West End Baptist in Manchester.
