Poor = spiritual submission

 

Dale Hanson Bourke's article in the Index about faith among the poor (page 4, Sept. 29) may have pulled at heartstrings, but it is reprehensible to misquote Scripture for the sake of proving a point.

The statement, "Blessed are the poor," stating the first of the Beatitudes, "for theirs is the kingdom of God." left out two little words that absolutely negate the whole article.

Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit ..." His statement had absolutely nothing to do with earthly wealth, but He emphasized spiritual submission to the Holy Spirit.
