"Giants" rolls into seventh week, tops $7 millionPublished November 9, 2006
As “Facing the Giants” enters its seventh week from its Sept. 28 opening, feedback from churches and the Hollywood box office continues to underscore the staying power of the movie. On Nov. 7, co-writer-director Stephen Kendrick told The Index that the movie, which cost only $100,000 to produce using volunteers and one camera, has generated $7 million, opened in 374 new theaters, and registered 716 professions of faith. The film’s one-millionth ticket was sold somewhere on Nov. 1 Kendrick said the film remains in the top 20 as it continues its momentum. A plan is being formulated to allow churches to show it in their sanctuaries between the theatrical release and when it is released on DVD. The setting could enlarge the audience even further and could be used as outreach for congregations. The film, produced by Albany’s Sherwood Baptist Church, continues to garner national media attention and was recently featured on NBC’s Today Show and in New Man magazine. Future stories are scheduled for the Los Angeles Times, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia Trends magazine, and on CBS News with Katie Couric and ABC World News Tonight. “Some individuals have told us it has broken their personal records for seeing a movie, some seeing it 5 to 10 times,” Kendrick said.
