Giants still rolling along into more theatersBy Joe Westbury, Managing EditorPublished December 7, 2006
AUGUSTA — Facing the Giants continues to make a national impact 10 weeks after its initial Hollywood premiere. As of early December the movie had sold nearly 1.4 million tickets and taken in $9.5 million in box office receipts. But the most important numbers being reported are the life-changing decisions for Christ, says co-writer-producer Stephen Kendrick. More than 800 professions of faith have been reported directly and many others remain unreported, he stated. “We are in 216 theaters and are releasing a church screening plan where congregations can show the movie in their church as an outreach while it is still in the theaters,” Kendrick told The Index. The general population will be able to purchase the DVD following its Jan. 30, 2007 release. Preorders are now being accepted at www.facingthegiants.com/buydvd/. Kendrick says the movie is faring well on the national scene alongside other productions with far larger budgets. Harsh Times with Christian Bale and Eva Longoria is still in theaters but has only grossed $3.5 million. The Return with Sarah Michelle Gellar is also still running, but has grossed about $8 million from its 1,986-theater premiere. Find Me Guilty with Vin Diesel cost $13 million to make but grossed just $1.2 million, Kendrick observed. And on the sports front, the soccer movie Goal: The Dream Begins and the basketball film Crossover both made $7 million or less.
