David Cox resigns FBC Daytona Beach pastorate after five months

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (BP) ó On Aug. 28, David Cox became senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, Fla. On Jan. 24, he resigned.

Addressing more than 500 people in the members-only Wednesday night meeting, Cox read from a prepared statement containing his resignation. The statement can be viewed online at www.christianindex.org.

Cox became co-pastor of First Baptist on Aug. 1, 2003, serving alongside Bobby Welch, immediate past president of the Southern Baptist Convention and pastor emeritus of First Baptist, Welch attended the meeting.

According to various media sources, Cox ran afoul of church members due to changes to First Baptistís worship style, his personal spending habits, and the resignations of many longtime staff members after Cox became pastor.

In an interview after the meeting, Cox said he intends to remain in the area at least until May so two of his three children can finish the school year.
