Honors

James Donald Carroll and Scotty Wilbanks were awarded Outstanding Alumnus and Outstanding Young Alumnus Awards, respectively, at Truett-McConnell’s spring commencement.

Carroll is a 1954 graduate and current interim pastor of Oak Grove Church in Glencoe, Ala. A native of Columbus, he surrendered to the ministry as a student at TMC before earning a master’s degree from Southwestern Seminary and doctorate from Luther Rice Seminary. He has served as pastor at Antioch Church in Barnesville as well as churches in North Carolina, Virginia, and Alabama.

Wilbanks is a member of the class of 1991, earning an associate in arts in music before obtaining his bachelor in music education from the University of Georgia. An eleven-year member of the Grammy-nominated Christian music group Newsong, he has made appearances on shows such as The Wayne Brady Show and CNN Headline News. He has worked with such entertainers as Amy Grant, Mark Wills, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

 

During spring commencement services at Truett-McConnell College the honorary degree of Doctor of Human Letters was presented to John L. Nix. He has served on the Board of Trustees for Truett-McConnell several times and was instrumental in the college remaining in White County. He is a member of First Church in Cleveland.

 

David Hammonds, senior pastor of Greentree Church in Tyrone, received his master of divinity degree from Immanuel Seminary in Peachtree City May 14.

 

Macedonia Baptist Church in Jackson held a recognition service for the nurses in the church on May 16. The church now has the newest Baptist Nursing Fellowship in Georgia. Nurses recognized were: Kim Conley, Beverly Vines, Misty Swann, Kelly McCord, Tanzie Norsworthy, Anna Wallis, Missy Stewart, Barbara Thomas, Frankie Simmons, Alberta Brady (who started nursing school in 1938, graduated in 1941 and retired in 1992 at 72), Amanda Washington, Brenda Brown, Rachel Combs, Lynn Gillespie, and Patti McEwen.
