Trends must stopBy John R. Pennington, BarnesvillePublished February 12, 2004
SIR: I would like to respond to the guest commentary in the Dec. 18 issue of The Index by David Gushee entitled “Gay Marriage? How We Got Here.” I’m in complete agreement with everything he said. I would, however, like to make an observation on the matter as it pertains to the church. Ungodly people have never paid any attention to moral behavior. But, at one time, the church did until, little by little, bit by bit, compromises were made to comply with man’s appetite to comply with the world that has brought the church to the state it’s in today. No one thinks anything about a fifteen-year-old church member having a baby out of wedlock or others living together unmarried, not to mention deacons being ordained who are noted social drinkers, not to mention those being ordained who are divorced; words being used in the pulpit that used to be forbidden to be spoken to girls working in drugstores, not to mention the disregard of dress by young and adults alike. The list goes on and on, homosexuality being the latest. It’s early, but the day is coming when that too will be commonplace unless things change from the direction they are headed. I am fully aware it is by grace we are saved. We are also required to keep that grace from becoming cheap. This happens by keeping the church as pure as we can and undefiled by the world. There are no cries out against it, only, just suggestions to build another home for unwed mothers or for drunkards and addicts. That’s not to say we shouldn’t continue to have compassion, but the trend must stop before God says enough! |
