Nursing degree on the way at Shorter College

ROME — Leaders at Shorter College have begun the steps to offering students a degree in nursing, courses beginning in the fall of 2010.

The school announced Feb. 6 that it is submitting a proposal this spring to the Georgia Board of Nursing for approval to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Currently Shorter offers all of the core courses for the prospective degree. Students enrolling this fall could begin the core sequence, said John Head, vice president for enrollment management.

Plans for the nursing program include a medical missions experience where students will serve needy populations domestically and abroad, said Shorter president Harold E. Newman.

“The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a great fit for Shorter College because it serves the educational needs of prospective students and the health-care needs of our society,” Newman stated. “The nursing program will go hand-in-hand with our mission as a Christian college to serve and minister to the needs of others.”
