The Open Door

Some may be asking, “What is the Great Commission Resurgence all about?” In reality, it can be about only one thing: The Great Commission. The following Biblical text states the context and the content of The Great Commission given by the Lord Jesus.

The eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they saw Him, they worshiped, but some doubted.

Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” HCSB

When one is able to say, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth,” there ought to be a “therefore.” It comes in the next words of Christ as He says, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.”

We are to evangelize and disciple the people of all nations on earth. Further, we are to be reminded that we are not in this alone. Jesus is with us always. That is a tremendous source of encouragement for every believer.

I believe that God desires to bless Southern Baptists who are serious about The Great Commission.

No doubt, God blesses those things that are close to His heart and this most certainly includes The Great Commission.

So, when we speak of a Great Commission Resurgence we must be speaking of a renewal of commitment to and involvement in The Great Commission. If all Southern Baptists would become genuinely and thoroughly committed to these words of Christ, we would see a powerful sweeping of the grace and glory of God across our planet unlike anything this world has ever seen. On the other hand, if we are not genuine in our words of commitment, if these are merely words, then God will surely judge our intent.

I am grateful for the privilege of serving with the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force. I appreciate Johnny Hunt giving me this opportunity to serve. When Johnny called to ask if I would serve I agreed and assured him that I would give my very best effort and that I would frankly and honestly speak my heart as we prayerfully seek the Lord’s guidance in the months ahead.

I have said often that with the world in its current spiritual condition, it’s not the time for the army of believers across the world to be in retreat. It is time for every Christian to rise up and be counted among the faithful. It is time for Georgia Baptists and all Southern Baptists to rise up to courageously and consistently go and give that the world may know the Jesus we know and love.

Without a doubt, this task force will consider new ways that Southern Baptists may approach our Christ-given responsibility.

For this assignment, we need your concerted prayers. Ronnie Floyd, chair of the task force, has said that he would like to have at least 5,000 prayer partners who would promise to pray everyday for the work of this group of eighteen.

I can say, personally, that I need your prayers. I cherish your prayers. Pray above all things that God will give me wisdom, and that he will give wisdom to the entire task force.

I believe Southern Baptists already have an outstanding denomination. Are there things that can be improved and strengthened? Of course there are. My prayer is that we will be able to find those areas that need to be tightened up, others that need a new focus or reorganization, and make a workable recommendation at next year’s annual meeting.

Our work will be in vain if the outcome fails to meet the test of a reasonable plan. I am praying that the result of God’s leadership over the course of the next several months will be so unifying, so practical, so inspiring, so logical, and so miraculous, that everyone will react by saying, “Why didn’t we think of this before?”

I would love for the outcome to be such that we will all know that it had to come from God.
