Georgia disaster relief teams minister in wake of Hurricane Charley devastation in FloridaPublished August 26, 2004
In response to the destruction brought on by Hurricane Charley throughout Florida, Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief Units joined other Southern Baptist disaster relief groups to bring aid to the region. Reporting from Wauchula, Fla., Jim Richardson, director for disaster relief for the Georgia Baptist Convention and a consultant with Men’s Ministries of the GBC, said that more than 100 disaster relief units had been activated from 19 state Baptist conventions as of August 20. Georgia units deployed included 1F, 9F, 11F, 7R, 10R, 14C, and shower trailer 1 to Wauchula, Fla. Shower unit 2 was deployed to Lake Wales, Fla. to support an Alabama Feeding unit. A chainsaw/recovery team was also activated to be sent to First Baptist Church in Wauchula.
As of August 23, Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers had provided approximately 50,000 meals for victims of Hurricane Charley and completed 60 worksites with 366 worksites remaining. State Director for Disaster Relief Jim Richardson said that more than 650 volunteer days had been completed in the field. A "volunteer day" is recorded as one volunteer working one day. |
