Scholarships

Music and Worship Ministries of the Georgia Baptist Convention recently awarded eight scholarships at the 2004 Youth II Music Camp.

The Constance Ashby Via Scholarship was awarded to Kimberly Knighton, a member of First Baptist Church in Brunswick, who plans to attend Brewton-Parker College.

David Schmidt of First Baptist Church Covington and Jamie Sexton of Wenona Baptist Church, Cordele were awarded the W. A. Anderson Scholarship. Both plan to major in music education at Brewton-Parker College

This year's recipient of the McCommon Scholarship is Elisabeth Aikens, a member of First Baptist Church, Blackshear. She plans to study music education at the University of Georgia. The scholarship is named for Paul McCommon, who retired in 1985 as director of the Church Music Department of the GBC.

A scholarship from the Georgia Baptist Church Music Conference is awarded also at Youth II Music Camp each year to a camper who plans to enroll in a college or university as music major. The GBCMC scholarship for 2004 went to Kelli Parker of Mountain Park First Baptist Church in Stone Mountain. She plans to major in music education at the University of Georgia.

Of the eight awards, three went to music campers to help pay the cost of attending camp itself. One such award is made possible by a fund set up in the name of Martha Settle, a long-time employee of the Church Music Department. Mallori Saylor, a member at First Baptist Church Newnan, was the winner of the Martha Settle Scholarship for 2004.

The scholarship this year in memory of Linda Sue Milam was awarded to Brandon Thomas, a member of Oaks Baptist Church in Lyons. This scholarship also covers the cost of next year's music camp.

The Andy Voyles Memorial Music Camp Scholarship was established in memory of a long-time music camper who was killed as a result of a car accident in February 2003. This scholarship was awarded to Tori Bryant, a member of First Baptist Church in Calhoun.

The Via, Anderson, Settle, Voyles and McCommon Funds are managed by the Georgia Baptist Foundation.

A Faculty Commendation Award was presented to Trin Patrick, a member of Wenona Baptist Church in Cordele.
