ROME — Shorter University has entered the faculty rebuilding phase as 36 of slightly more than 100 teaching staff have resigned rather than sign a new lifestyle statement. But President Don Dowless affirms the new direction that aligns the university closer to a biblical worldview.
“For months we have been preparing for this eventuality. We have already hired new faculty and are in the process of hiring additional well-qualified faculty and staff,” he told The Index.
Normal attrition averages between 20 and 25 at the end of the spring semester as faculty accept employment opportunities elsewhere, Dawn Tolbert, Shorter’s vice president for public relations, said. The 3,000-plus enrollment university, which graduated 485 students on May 4, employs “about 105 to 108 faculty” during a normal academic year, she added.
