Baptist benefactor Jim McAfee of Big Canoe died Nov. 3 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta of complications following heart surgery.

McAfee, 65, had been an executive with Charter Medical Corp., ValueMark Healthcare Systems Inc., and Hallmark Healthcare.

Along with his wife, Carolyn, McAfee had donated millions of dollars to Mercer University's school of theology before making a $10-million gift in 1997. They later made a $4-million gift to construct the building which now houses the school on the Cecil B. Day Campus in Atlanta. The school now bears their name.

The couple also made considerable contributions to their alma mater, Union University in Jackson, Tenn. McAfee was chairman of the board of Baptists Today, which is published in Macon.

The funeral was held Nov. 5 at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta with burial in Big Canoe. Survivors include a son, J. Thomas McAfee III of Big Canoe.
