Purpose of Constitution is to defend the peopleBy Jeffery C. Wells, DublinPublished March 11, 2004
SIR: Recently in The Macon Telegraph, the editorial board proclaimed that the President was wrong in asking Congress to support an amendment to the Constitution banning same-sex marriages. They said this would be the first amendment to re- strict the freedoms of private citizens rather than protect them. I disagree. Thanks to rulings from the federal and state judiciaries, we have turned the first amendment to the Bill of Rights into a “freedom limiting” amendment. An overwhelming majority of Americans are against same-sex marriages. If we allow a same-sex couple to enjoy this status, what is to stop three men and one woman or two women and one man? It will undermine this nation and lead us into dangerous waters. An amendment will protect us from this, letting the Constitution fulfill its purpose – protecting and defending. Another issue surrounding this debate that seems to bother me as well. In San Francisco the mayor has allowed marriage licenses to be issued to same-sex couples. This is obviously a violation of state and federal laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. However, no one seems to be motivated enough to stop him. The question here is why was Roy Moore castigated in Alabama for defying the law when the mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsome, is doing the same and walks around unchecked. Hypocrisy? I think it is. Those who have perpetuated this foolishness think that we who believe in God’s word are archaic and foolish. They think that morals and values don’t come from God; they come from within. Truth is relative and values are a matter of personal faith and decision. I do think our nation needs a wake-up call. We need to realize that we cannot sit by and take our traditional values and morals for granted. We have to fight for them. Chew on it for a while. |
