C. Sterling Sexton, 72, died Dec. 9 in Birmingham, Ala. following a long illness.

A native of Atlanta, Sexton held a bachelor's degree from Mercer University in Macon, as well as a master's and doctorate degree from Columbia Seminary in Decatur, and a doctorate from Emory Theological Seminary in Atlanta.

During his career in the ministry, Sexton served as senior pastor at several churches throughout Georgia and as director of missions for both the Fairburn and Flint River Baptist Associations. At the time of his retirement, he was vice president and director of pastoral care at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta.

Sexton taught at New Orleans Seminary in Atlanta and led several national and international mission trips. At the time of his death, he was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Camp Sexton of Birmingham, Ala., four sons, Charles Sterling of Sevierville, Tenn., David Michael of Fayetteville, Stephen Lawrence of Birmingham, Ala. and John Mark of Lawrenceville, sister, Barbara Ann Durden and seven grandchildren.
