SYCAMORE, Ga. — In a town of just over 700 people, the legacy of one Georgia Baptist family is spreading the gospel far beyond its borders. From the red clay fields of Turner County to mission fields across the globe, the impact of Gene and Myrl Pirkle and their descendants is a testimony to faith, hard work, and generational discipleship.
In 2001, South Carolina Baptist layman and veterinarian Roger Troutman stepped out of his comfort zone and traveled to Alaska to serve as a volunteer trail veterinarian for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, commonly referred to as The Iditarod.
The Dallas Cup Hospitality Center in mid-April received more than 2,000 visits from youth soccer players and coaches from around the world. It also presented the opportunity for those athletes and their families to see Christians working together for a common goal as volunteers from local churches provided meals and engaged in conversations through an outreach sponsored by the Dallas Baptist Association.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” Whether we’re naturally planners or procrastinators, we probably don’t anticipate every disaster or crisis event that could happen to us or our communities.
Before being called to pastor a church, I was privileged to preach in nearly every church in our county and some churches in adjoining counties. It was a great and joyful privilege, but one thing concerned me in each church I visited: empty seats and often whole empty pews.
