Thursday thoughts: The glorious unknown

Posted

I love music. I listen to a Christian music station all the time. The station I listen to at certain times during the day will play "older" Christian songs. Side note - when I say older, I mean like 25 years or so because this song was popular when my kids were teenagers and that was a long time ago!

The chorus to one particular song said, "Saddle up your horses we got a trail to blaze. Through the wild blue yonder of God's amazing grace. Let's follow our leader unto the glorious unknown. This is a life like no other, this is the great adventure."

Now anyone who knows me knows that "adventurous" is not really a word you might use to describe me. I have learned through many years of being married to an adventurous person to step out of my comfort zone. It's like the song says - a life like no other, this is the great adventure.

Adventure is defined as an unusual and exciting, sometimes hazardous, experience or activity. If you think about it, this is exactly what many people in the Bible underwent as they were called to step into the unknown for God. I am just going to be honest and say that at times, or possibly most times, I can allow the unknown to trigger my fears, which in turn can make me anxious, stressed, and certainly not adventurous.

I do know that is exactly what Satan wants. He desires to distract me with the fearful unknown so I will be ineffective and not trust the God who KNOWS. I don't know about you, but it's hard for me to exercise my faith when I am heading into the unknown. I am just going to list a few things, maybe to remind myself, of what I know about God to help me walk boldly with Him into the adventure of the glorious unknown.

First, God is always in control of the unknown adventures in my life. He is the One who can give me the strength to face anything, and I will never face it alone. Psalms 18:28-30 says, "You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help, I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. As for God, His way is perfect; The Lord's Word is flawless; He shields all who takes refuge in Him." He is my strength, light, and shield when facing and walking through the unknown.

Second, God promises to be my guide through the unknown adventures. We are never alone. Deuteronomy 31:8 says, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” He will never allow us to walk into the unknown alone - we just have to follow His lead.

Lastly, there really is not an unknown if you are trusting in an all-knowing God. We might see the unknown, but God knows and holds the plan. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, Plans to give prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." God KNOWS. He wants us to trust Him. We just have to remove our fear, replace it with faith, and follow His plan.

I am not adventurous, but life is an adventure. If you are walking through life trusting anyone or anything other than God, it will be an adventure of fear, anxiety, and stress. You just might fall off that horse that the song is telling you to saddle up.

However, if you give God the control, allow Him to guide you, and follow His lead, you will head into the wild blue yonder of His amazing grace. It might be an unknown, but with God it's a glorious unknown leading to a life like no other and the best adventure!! Saddle up, because we have trails to blaze!
