MOUNT VERNON — Members of Brewton-Parker College and Daniell Baptist Association traveled to Albany on Jan. 28 to assist with recovery efforts after a tornado devastated the area Jan. 22.

Billy Puckett, professor in the Christian Studies Division at BPC and associational missionary at DBA, led a six-member team to clear away downed trees and other debris. The team worked alongside Javier, a homeowner working to recover his residence so that his displaced family could move back home as soon as possible. “The DBA/BPC team contributed to the recovery of the Albany community and found that serving is a blessing,” Puckett said.

Aquilla Ross, a freshman at Brewton-Parker, participated in the mission effort and commented, “Today's mission trip was inspiring. Material things can be replaced but a person's life cannot be. Although they are sad their houses are damaged there will be joy in the end.”

Seeing the Albany community join together

Brewton-Parker junior Allie French said about the experience, “Today we were able to help out two families who had trees down in their yards. It was awesome to experience the community come out and help their neighbors by cleaning up their yards, cutting trees up to move to the road, or even bring lunch to the workers. The love of God was shown through the people even if they weren't believers. It was such an amazing experience!”

Johnathan Jenkins, a Brewton-Parker freshman, said, “With my dad and little sister living only about ten minutes away from the worst damage, it was really sad for me to see the damage the storm caused. It was great to meet Javier and Mr. James, whose homes were severely affected. We helped clean up their yards and cut up trees. We also prayed with both of these men for God to help in their restoration process. The mission effort was a much needed experience.”
