Investigators did not immediately know what prompted Monday's attack but said they believed the victims were targeted.

(AP) — The family of a Georgia woman killed by gunfire as sheriff's deputies executed a drug warrant at her cousin's home have filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming the deadly raid violated the slain woman's civil rights. Latoya James died May 4, 2021, after Camden County deputies with a warrant knocked down the door to her cousin's home at about 5 a.m.
WOODSTOCK, Ga. (AP) — The Ford Motor Co. says it plans to appeal a $1.7 billion verdict against the automaker after a pickup truck crash claimed the lives of a Georgia couple. A Georgia jury returned the verdict late last week. Lawyers for the couple confirmed the verdict. The civil case involved what the plaintiffs’ lawyers called dangerously defective roofs on Ford pickup trucks.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia’s unemployment rate hit a new record low of 2.8% in July. That's the third month in a row that the state posted a new record low jobless rate. Unemployment was 2.9% in June and 3.9% in July 2021. More than 5.1 million Georgians say they were working in May, while 150,000 were unemployed.

ATLANTA (AP) — Gov. Brian Kemp is naming a former police chief of two suburban Atlanta counties as the next director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Michael “Mike” Register would replaced Vic Reynolds. Kemp in June named Reynolds as a superior court judge in Cobb County. Register was police chief in Clayton County and then in Cobb County.

ATLANTA (AP) — Nearly 200 Georgia state prison employees have been arrested for job-related crimes since the beginning of 2020. The list obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows 195 Georgia Department of Corrections employees arrested through June 30. Of those, 143 are state-certified police officers. The charges include 69 arrests related to drugs, with some prison employees bringing drugs into prison to provide to inmates.

COLQUITT, Ga. (AP) — A sheriff in rural southwest Georgia has been arrested on charges of sexual battery and violating his oath of office. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it arrested Miller County Sheriff Richard Morgan after the local district attorney asked its agents to look into allegations of sexual misconduct involving the sheriff. The agency said in a news release that the charges stemmed from an incident that took place during a 911 call, but gave no further details.

Nihad Al Jaberi was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court almost six months after a jury convicted him of smuggling and other criminal counts.
FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) — The Army has identified two soldiers who were killed during training in the mountains of north Georgia. A statement from Fort Benning said 2nd Lt. Evan Fitzgibbon and Staff Sgt. George Taber died Tuesday after a tree fell on them during inclement weather. Three other soldiers were taken to a hospital with injuries.

FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) — More than 3,800 Army soldiers are returning home to Georgia five months after their rapid deployment to Europe after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Several hundred troops arrived Tuesday at Fort Stewart to be reunited with spouses and children waving flags and homemade signs. Army officials say the rest of the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Armored Brigade is expected home by the end of August.
