Commentary: Christ and service define Pro-life Woman of the Year Suzanne Guy

Words cannot express the gratitude that Georgia Baptists feel toward Suzanne Guy. Recently, she received the Pro-life Woman of the Year Award at the annual Celebrate Life Conference hosted by Abby Johnson in Washington, D.C., June 27-29.

Claire Bartlett, the Executive Director of Georgia Life Alliance, said, “We are so happy for Suzanne receiving this well-deserved recognition - a woman who is an inspiration to so many.”

“Both at the Capitol and in her community, Suzanne never stops,” says Elizabeth Edmunds, who used to lobby at the Georgia state capitol.  Edmunds reminds us that, “whether she is lobbying for pro-life legislation or delivering diapers to a mom in need, Suzanne sets a standard for servant leadership, speaks hard truths with love, and never asks of someone else what she herself is not already doing to build a Culture of Life.”

The award proclaims these facts that are known about Suzanne: she “is one of the pro-life movement's greatest encouragers;” she is a woman who has a heart for prayer and service; and she can be found volunteering on a regular basis to help save lives and help families that are dealing with difficult situations.

The award recognizes that Suzanne serves on a local grass roots level and that she is also making an impact nationally with her daughter Rachel, who is also seen as a “phenomenal pro-life woman.”

Suzanne’s testimony includes having received an adverse prenatal diagnosis resulting in pressure for her to abort her unborn child. Refusing to have an abortion, Suzanne welcomed baby Rachel into the world. She was willing to give birth to her child, no matter what physical or medical difficulties may or may not have been.

She believes all life is to be respected and protected from the very moment of conception, no matter what the physical condition of the child may be. This is a strong Biblical perspective that reflects all life is created in the image of God and is to be valued!

Suzanne’s compassion for the unborn and her inspirational story about Rachel have encouraged many women, even though they may have received difficult news during a pregnancy. She believes that caring for mothers and babies is to be part of the core of what churches do and not an extracurricular activity.

Along with her commitment to the local church, she was the founder of Life Initiatives and Values, a ministry that was started under the support of her pastor, Jeremy Morton at First Baptist Church Woodstock. She is also a sidewalk advocate for life and a local leader in “40 Days for Life.”

Lauren Eden, a pro-life advocate, reminds us that, “Suzanne is a powerful example of being the hands and feet of Jesus to moms, dads, and babies who need help, hope, and support. She fights tirelessly for the value of every human life, and she and her team have walked alongside countless women, men, and babies who are facing difficult situations, seeking to love them like Jesus and share Christ with them.”

Eden further states, “I can’t think of a woman who is more deserving of this award than Suzanne Guy! Suzanne is the most passionate, humble, kingdom-minded, servant-hearted woman I have ever met in the pro-life movement.”

Edmunds in closing, testifies to the fact that “those of us who co-labor alongside her lovingly refer to her as the ‘pro-life energizer bunny’ and it is accurate. She is never lacking in zeal. To count the lives she has saved or hearts she has led to Jesus would be like trying to count trees in the forest. This is a well-deserved recognition of the hard and often invisible work of those on the front lines of this battle.”
