MACON, Ga. – Daniel Chon, pastor of Macon Korean Baptist Church, is expected to be nominated for vice president at the Georgia Baptist Convention’s annual meeting in Augusta next month.

“He is a strong preacher and strong in Baptist doctrine,” said Yong Nam Suh, pastor at Atlanta Dream Baptist Church in Buford who announced that he will nominate Chon for the post.

If elected, he would be the first Korean-American to serve in the role in Georgia.

The annual meeting is set for November 13-15 at Warren Baptist Church in Augusta, and the registration portal is open for churches to sign up messengers.

The Georgia Baptist Convention, made up of 3,600 churches with 1.4 million members, holds a business meeting each November. People attend from across the state, drawn as much by the fellowship, preaching, and singing as by any business matters on the agenda.

At the meeting, messengers will elect a new president and first, second, third and fourth vice presidents. The rankings of the vice presidents are based on the number of votes they receive.

Chon received his undergraduate and master degree from Korea University in South Korea and his master's degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

“His father was a Baptist pastor in South Korea,” Suh said. “He’s grounded in Baptist doctrine. He loves the people. He loves the church. He loves the Lord.”

Chon’s church has consistently given from 7.5% to 12.8% of its undesignated receipts through the Cooperative Program. That annual amounts ranged from $19,000 to $32,000. The congregation also gives to the Lottie Moon, Annie Armstrong, and Mission Georgia special offerings. It’s pre-COVID contributions to the special offers topped $5,000 combined.

Chon and his wife, Lois, have a son and daughter, both students at Harvard University.
