Editorial: Mission Board's regional SPARK conferences help churches reach their communities

The Georgia Baptist Mission Board’s series of regional SPARK conferences have gotten off to a strong start, and, if your church hasn't yet gotten on board, it’s not too late.

At the first of the regional conferences, Scott Sullivan, the Mission Board’s discipleship catalyst, challenged church leaders to develop strategies to grow strong disciples who can unleash the power of the gospel in their communities and around the world.

“My opinion is that the greatest gospel force on the planet is not in the pulpits; it’s in the pews,” Sullivan said. “If we don’t equip and empower the people of God to be disciples who make disciples, we will never accomplish our mission.”

Sullivan is right on target. The people in the pews need to be empowered and then unleashed to take the gospel to their families, friends, neighbors, coworkers, everyone they encounter. And, in so doing, the world will never be the same.

Scheduled into the middle of next month, the Mission Board’s annual SPARK conferences will involve more than 40 speakers who will share insights intended to show churches how they can grow disciples and reach their communities for Christ.

SPARK is always one of the Mission Board’s most popular events. It drew more than 1,600 attendees to regional sites around the state last year for training in a variety of key areas, including evangelism and discipleship, church growth, public relations, church security, children and student ministries, missions, men, church administration, and more.

The purpose is to help churches develop strategies to bring people to Christ and to teach them to bring others to Christ.
