As civil war continues to rage in Sudan, Send Relief is dedicated to bringing help and hope to millions of displaced Sudanese people. While many efforts have involved providing food and other necessary resources, we also understand the importance of setting individuals up for long-term success, giving them opportunities to support their families in the present and for years to come.
Through one of our recent projects, Send Relief provided microloans that allowed 47 Sudanese refugees to start their own small businesses, including a hair salon, an electronics repair shop, and a business manufacturing soap and cosmetics.
Your support allows Send Relief to further support these individuals by covering a share of their medical bills and their children’s tuition fees.
All of these efforts are making an immeasurable difference in the lives of refugees across this war-torn nation.
Karim’s Story
One microloan recipient is a man we will call Karim. Karim holds an advanced degree and was working before the war destroyed everything he and his family had. Now, he finds himself living in a remote village, working for an employer who pays him very little—and sometimes nothing at all.
When the Send Relief team visited Karim’s house, he was surprised by the love and care they showed for his family. Like many refugees, he has grown accustomed to being treated with indifference or contempt. However, the believers he met acted differently toward him. They prayed with his wife, who was experiencing a medical issue. They set him up with a microloan so he could start his own business and consistently provide for his family.
Eventually, Karim asked for a Bible. Now, our team is working to form a Bible study with his entire family!
Finding Community
Displaced people like Karim are struggling not only financially, but also with the emotional and psychological ramifications of war. The refugees we work with often express how they feel uprooted and isolated, alone in a new place that sees them as a burden instead of a person with talents and abilities that could contribute to their community.
That’s why, when we grant individuals microloans, we also invite them to attend a meeting twice a month with other loan recipients working to start their own businesses. In these meetings, participants receive business coaching, share their experiences, and exchange advice. Most importantly, they learn from God’s Word and build community with others who understand their struggles, pain, and hopes for the future.
Meeting attendees expressed that they felt seen and heard for the first time in months or even years. Leaders helped them explore their dreams, skills, and experiences. They found much-needed community, people they could cry with as they prayed for peace in Sudan and laugh with as they played group games. They are learning, growing, and worshiping together, building a network of small business owners who can support each other as they strive to make better lives for themselves and their families.
Send Relief is continuing to respond to needs in Sudan. You can join us as we provide job opportunities, food, medical supplies, and much more to families impacted by war. Learn more here!
