ALPHARETTA, Ga. — From small rural congregations to college campuses and growing churches in metro areas, Georgia Baptists are responding to the Georgia Baptist Mission Board’s Prayer 365 initiative. Prayer 365 calls churches and ministries across the state to set aside intentional time throughout the year to pray for gospel advance in their communities, across Georgia, and around the world.
For Aaron Frasier, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chula, prayer has long been part of the church’s rhythm. But the Prayer 365 initiative provided an opportunity to lead his congregation in focused prayer for the lost.
Frasier held a special prayer gathering on Monday night, Jan. 26, as part of a broader 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting that his church observed from Jan. 11–31.
“We had 15 people at the meeting, which I’d say is good for a Monday night,” Frasier said. “We average about 100 on Sunday mornings, and our Wednesday night prayer meeting is usually between 15 and 25.”
“We started praying generally for all the state of Georgia, worked our way down to our local community, then down to one person in our lives who is lost,” Frasier said. “Finally, we prayed for our own hearts to be broken over lostness the way Paul was in Romans 9.”
Frasier said he was encouraged not only by the turnout but by the depth of the prayers offered.
“In my pessimism, I went in honestly wondering if anybody was even going to come,” he said. “I told my wife beforehand it probably wouldn’t go more than 30 minutes. But we ended up being there for more than an hour, and it was beautiful to hear God’s people praying out loud for lost people to be saved.”
Frasier said the experience reinforced the importance of prayer as a foundational strategy for evangelism.
“We are very good at coming up with strategies to reach the lost and methods for sharing our faith,” he said. “But one of the greatest strategies that is often neglected is prayer.”
First Baptist Church of Toccoa also hosted a Prayer 365 gathering earlier this year. According to Evan Alexander, associate pastor of missions and discipleship, the church held a night of prayer on Jan. 4 following a morning message from pastor Brett Sanders on the power of prayer.
The evening included corporate worship, Scripture reading, and guided prayer prompts focused on the church’s mission locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally.
Members were encouraged to spend time praying individually before pastoral staff and lay leaders led corporate prayers for each emphasis.
“The focused time of prayer and corporate worship has been labeled by several in the congregation as an incredible blessing to their personal lives,” Alexander said, noting one participant described the evening as “so good for my heart.”
Prayer 365 has also reached college campuses. Students involved with Baptist Collegiate Ministry at Georgia Tech launched the spring semester with campus prayer walks on Jan. 12, the first day of classes.
Four prayer walk groups went out at different times throughout the day and covered different areas of campus so that the entire Georgia Tech campus was prayed over.
In total, about 40 students participated in at least one of the prayer walks, with several joining multiple groups, according to Eric Swenson, campus minister at Georgia Tech.
“The main focus of the prayer walks was to pray that the gospel would be spread faithfully on campus and that Georgia Tech students would come to salvation this semester,” Swenson said.
He added that the idea grew out of a desire among student leaders to cultivate a deeper prayer life and a greater burden for reaching fellow students.
Already, the impact has been visible. Swenson said students have continued meeting weekly for prayer walks and campus prayer gatherings, and the ministry has seen nine salvations this semester.
“The number of BCM students consistently sharing the gospel on campus has increased significantly from last semester. Praise God!”
Churches in metro Atlanta are also embracing the initiative.
David Brunson, pastor of Trinity Life Church in Dacula, said about 40 people participated in the church’s Prayer 365 gathering, a strong response for a congregation that averages about 60 in weekly attendance.
Participants prayed specifically for the lost in Gwinnett County and across Georgia.
The church is also working closely with the Gwinnett Metro Baptist Network to support evangelistic outreach across the region.
“Our mission at Trinity Life is to be Holy Spirit-led in reaching and teaching people,” Brunson said. “Prayer 365 fits directly into that calling.”
