LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) — The 22nd annual Heritage Classic Golf Tournament on Monday not only raised $241,000 to benefit students at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Boyce College, but featured a hole-in-one, which earned one golfer a new car, and had four teams deadlocked for first place.
The tournament conclusion also included awarding the $5,000 Rick Bordas Memorial Scholarship to a Southern student who is scheduled to graduate next May.
The highlights of the annual golf scramble at Big Spring Country Club include:
• Jacob Myrick was awarded the Bordas scholarship. He has a degree in civil engineering, but is pursuing a Master of Divinity degree at Southern, pursuing certificates in Greek exegesis, Hebrew exegesis, and biblical theology.
He and his wife, Tori, and daughter Lacey were on hand for the presentation. Tori earned a degree in family development and finished with a Master of Arts in theology at Southern this past May.
Both have been employed at Southern. Jacob currently serves in the research doctoral studies office and Tori, after working at Southern, is at home to care for Lacey since her birth. They are members of Clifton Baptist Church.
Jacob told the crowd that he and his wife were in the same church nursery together in Montgomery, Ala. He was saved in 2018 and said a “strong desire” to serve in Christian vocational ministry followed, leading the couple to move to Louisville to pursue seminary studies.
“I knew this institution’s vision for preparing gospel ministers,” he said. Visiting on Preview Day, he said they “fell in love with campus and the faculty.” They moved to Louisville in the spring of 2023. He said classes at Southern resulted in “being more shaped in the image of Christ.”
Southern President Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., told golfers and friends that “nobody cares about theological education but committed Christians. The future of the church comes down to the education of young ministers called to the gospel. We have young men who are going to be the preachers of the future.”
Mohler thanked the 102 golfers and 13 sponsors for their “stewardship invested in us (Southern).”
Southern, with an enrollment of 6,000 students from all 50 states and 70 different nations, does not accept any taxpayer money. He voiced his thankfulness for full housing, classrooms, and full hearts. He said Southern seeks to keep tuition costs as low as possible and said, “You help make that possible.”
• Ryan Smith had a hole-in-one on the par-three, 161-yard sixth hole, hitting a seven-iron to win a new Chevrolet Equinox. It was his first hole-in-one.
• For the first time in the tournament’s history, four teams tied for first place at 14-under par (58). The Rick Bordas team, which has won the tournament six times in the past and the last three events, was declared the winning team based on scores from the back nine. The Bordas team shot 27 on the back nine for a two-shot margin over second place.
