DULUTH, Ga. – Calhoun pastor Jamey Hunt will lead the Georgia Baptist Education Commission, a panel that supports the work of Brewton-Parker College, Shorter University and Truett McConnell University while also administering a scholarship program.

Hunt, pastor of Sonoraville Baptist Church, was elected chairman by his peers during a meeting on Tuesday at the Georgia Baptist Missions and Ministry Center in Duluth. He succeeds Danny Cochran, pastor of Holly Creek Baptist Church in Chatsworth, who had chaired the commission for the past two years.

Tim Akin, pastor of First Baptist Church in Douglasville, was elected vice chairman, a post that Hunt had occupied.

Each year, the Education Commission gives scholarships to incoming freshmen attending one of the three Georgia Baptist institutions.

Recipients of the scholarships, called Student Achievement Awards, are selected based on academic achievement, college entrance exam scores, church and community involvement, and recommendations from their Georgia Baptist pastors.
