Times Journal Media Group, parent company of the Marietta Daily Journal and other northwest Georgia and metro Atlanta newspapers, has acquired three additional Georgia newspapers: The Walton Tribune (Monroe), The Covington News (Newton County), and The Oconee Enterprise (Watkinsville). All three publications print weekly or biweekly and operate corresponding news websites.
The acquisition was announced by Times Journal Media Group owner Otis Brumby III and Patrick Graham, owner and publisher of the acquired newspapers.
Graham will continue serving as publisher under the new ownership. A longtime community journalist, he has owned or operated newspapers for more than 25 years. He also retains ownership of three Alabama newspapers: The Sand Mountain Leader (Albertville), The Mountain Valley News (Rainsville), and The North Jackson Press (Stevenson).
“Otis is a great friend and an even better newspaper guy,” Graham said. “The Brumby family has a long and respected history in Georgia journalism, and I know they will be excellent stewards of these award-winning newspapers. I’m excited about the future and grateful to continue helping local journalism not only survive but thrive in the communities we serve.”
With this acquisition, Times Journal Media Group now publishes 21 newspapers and news websites across Georgia, stretching from northwest Georgia through metro Atlanta and east to Madison and Watkinsville.
“For generations, my family has recognized the vital role newspapers play in their communities,” Brumby said. “These newspapers have served their readers well, and we are thrilled that Patrick will continue leading them into the future.”
The Brumby family has been involved in Georgia newspapers for more than 100 years. The company’s flagship publication, the Marietta Daily Journal, traces its roots to 1866. Otis A. Brumby Sr. founded The Cobb County Times in 1916 and later purchased the Marietta Daily Journal in 1951, merging the two papers. Otis Brumby Jr. became publisher in 1967, and Otis Brumby III succeeded him in 2012.
Other Times Journal Media Group publications include the Rome News-Tribune, Gwinnett Daily Post, Cherokee Tribune, Cherokee Ledger Monthly, Calhoun Times, The Polk County Standard Journal, Walker County Messenger, The Catoosa County News, Morgan County Citizen, Clayton News, Henry Herald, Jackson Progress-Argus, Rockdale/Newton Citizen, and three Neighbor newspapers serving Fulton County.
“It is a privilege for my sister, Lee Garrett, and me to be the third generation managing our family-owned newspaper business,” Brumby said. “Our father taught us the values of hard work, faith, family, and integrity. We take seriously our responsibility to these communities, and look forward to serving them.”
“We believe in Friday night football. We believe in covering local schools, local government, local churches, and local events,” Brumby added. “The stories that matter most are the stories happening in your own community. Those local stories have the greatest relevance and meaning.”
