CLEVELAND, Ga. — A Truett McConnell University student was found dead Sunday evening in student housing on the university’s Cleveland campus, according to the Cleveland Police Department.

Officers responded at approximately 5:18 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive person at a residence in the Twin Springs Apartments. Police found a man dead inside the residence.

Cleveland Police Chief Jeff Shoemaker confirmed Monday that the man was a TMU student and that his family had been notified.

The White County Coroner’s Office transported the body to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory for a medical examination. Police said foul play is not suspected, but the case remains under investigation.

TMU confirmed the death in a statement Monday, but did not identify the student or provide additional details, citing respect for the family.

“With heavy hearts, we confirm the death of a TMU student yesterday on campus,” the statement said. “Our community is heartbroken, and our prayers are with the student's family, friends, classmates, and all who are grieving.”

The university said it is cooperating with authorities and asked people not to speculate or share unverified information while the investigation continues.

TMU also said counseling, pastoral care, and other support are being provided to students, faculty, and staff affected by the death.

“We are grateful for the prayers and kindness of our neighbors, alumni, and friends, and we ask that you keep the family and our campus in your prayers,” the statement said.
