Comparison Begins with a Lie

Comparison often begins with a single moment. A passing comment. An unintended laugh. A well-meaning observation.

The Enemy has been using the same strategy for generations. He whispers that someone else's personality is the standard. That another woman's gifting is somehow more valuable to God's kingdom. Before long, comparison takes root, and we begin questioning the very way God created us.

For me, it happened when I was a 27-year-old pastor's wife.

Still a young believer and serving alongside my husband in his first senior pastor role, I attended a church celebration honoring the 90th birthday of a beloved former pastor's wife. Story after story was shared about her faithful life and the legacy she had left. Like many young women in ministry, I found myself wondering what kind of legacy I would leave.

Then her husband took the microphone.

He lovingly described her as kind, quiet, and never one to speak up or voice her opinion. At that exact moment, several people turned, looked directly at me...and laughed.

Oof.

I smiled and laughed along, but a seed of comparison had been planted. My personality didn't resemble hers. I was opinionated, talkative, and energized by leading people. I also did not play the piano, unless you count Chopsticks. I could absolutely play Chopsticks.

Although those church members meant no harm, that evening a lie quietly settled into my heart: maybe I wasn't what a pastor's wife was supposed to be.

Yet Romans 12 reminds us that God's design has never been uniformity. "For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function... Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them."

Let us use them. Not someone else's. Ours.

 God's Design Was Never Sameness

Years later, while studying at Southern Seminary, the Lord gave me another picture of that truth.

During a classroom discussion, our professor presented a case study involving a church member caught in an emotional affair and simply asked, "What do you do now?"

Around the room, the responses reflected the beautiful diversity of Christ's body. Some immediately thought about leadership, accountability, and next steps. Others naturally focused on caring for those who were hurting. One classmate quietly said, "I would make dinner for the man's wife, take it to her home, and ask if she'd like me to watch her children for a while."

Oof.

This time, the "oof" didn't hurt.

Instead, it became a beautiful reminder that God never intended every believer to respond the same way! Some are gifted to lead through difficult situations. Others instinctively step into the hurt and care for those who are wounded. Both are needed. Both reflect Christ. Both bring glory to God.

In that classroom, the beauty of the body of Christ became wonderfully clear. Different gifts were never meant to compete with one another. They were meant to complement one another.

Walk in the Gifts He's Given You

1 Corinthians 12 reminds us that there are "varieties of gifts... varieties of service... and varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all." Paul goes on to explain that the foot should not wish it were a hand, nor the ear an eye, because God Himself arranged every member of the body exactly as He chose.

Sister, God did not make a mistake when He gifted you.

The body of Christ was never designed to be filled with copies of the same person. It was designed by a wise Creator who delights in giving different gifts to His people for His glory and the good of His church.

So don't let the Enemy convince you that someone else's gifting is more valuable than yours. Don't spend your life trying to become someone God never asked you to be. Someone else's calling was never yours to carry. Walk faithfully in the gifts He has entrusted to you.
