TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has appointed Palm Beach County Judge Renatha Francis to the Florida Supreme Court. The governor announced Francis’ appointment to the Supreme Court at a news conference in West Palm Beach on Friday. Francis is scheduled to join the court on Sept. 1, replacing retiring Justice Alan Lawson.

LIND, Wash. (AP) — A small town in Washington state was evacuated due to a fast-moving fire that burned a half-dozen homes as crews in California made progress against the state’s deadliest and largest wildfire of the year. In Washington, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that residents of Lind needed to flee due to the encroaching flames.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four people have been critically injured after a lightning strike near the White House. The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department says the victims, two men and two women, were injured Thursday in Lafayette Park.

Federal meteorologists say this hurricane season may not be quite as busy as they initially thought, but it should still be more active than normal. Thursday's updated hurricane outlook by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration trims a storm off some of the high end of predictions. It says there's a 60% chance of a busier than normal season.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has suspended the elected state prosecutor of Tampa for pledging not to enforce the state’s new 15-week abortion ban and for supporting gender transition treatments for minors. The Republican governor announced Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren's suspension at the county’s sheriff’s office on Thursday.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — National Guard soldiers rushed to distribute bottled water to flood-ravaged eastern Kentucky as forecasters warned of more rain coming to the region. In the days since historic flooding swamped the Appalachian region, the availability of water surfaced as a concern for victims after the floodwaters damaged water systems. As donations pour into the region, water is a top priority, along with cleaning supplies.

KLAMATH RIVER, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters have gotten their first hold on California’s deadliest and most destructive fire of the year and say the blaze probably will remain stalled through the weekend. Fire officials say the McKinney Fire near the Oregon border was 10% contained Wednesday night and crews were making progress carving firebreaks around much of the rest of the blaze.

Indiana Rep. Walorski killed in car crash

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski has been killed in a car accident in her northern Indiana District. That's according to a statement Wednesday from her office. Walorski, who served on the House Ways and Means Committee, was first elected to represent Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District in 2012. She previously served three terms in the state’s legislature.

HINDMAN, Ky. (AP) — The long days searching debris-clogged creekbanks are taking a toll on search teams in flood-ravaged eastern Kentucky. Phillip Dix is leading a team from Memphis, Tennessee. He says his crew is used to the stifling heat and humidity. But he says they're tired under the grind of 12-hour days spent pulling people from danger.

BOSTON (AP) — The Christian flag that became the focus of a free speech legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court has been raised outside Boston City Hall to cheers and songs of praise. Wednesday's flag-raising took place about three months after the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision ruled that the city discriminated against Harold Shurtleff and his Camp Constitution group because of his “religious viewpoint” when it refused permission for him to fly the banner on City Hall Plaza in 2017.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Temperatures are soaring in a region of eastern Kentucky where people are shoveling out the wreckage of massive flooding. Many are working without electricity. The National Weather Service expects the heat and humidity to combine for a heat index of up to 100 by midday. Forecasters expect the steam bath to last through Thursday evening.

KLAMATH RIVER, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters say they're making progress as they battle California's largest and deadliest wildfire of the year. The McKinney Fire in Northern California didn't grow on Tuesday, although it remains out of control. The blaze that began last Friday has virtually wiped out the tiny hamlet of Klamath River and at least four people are confirmed dead.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has given final approval to a bill enhancing health care and disability benefits for millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden's desk, and he says he is looking forward to signing it into law so those veterans "finally get the benefits and comprehensive health care they earned and deserve.”

More bodies are emerging from the sodden landscape, and the death toll now stands at 37. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear says more than 1,300 people have been rescued, and crews are still trying to reach some people who've been cut off by floods or mudslides.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Another round of rainstorms is hitting flooded Kentucky mountain communities. The rain fell Monday as more bodies emerged from the sodden landscape, and the governor warned that high winds could bring another threat — falling trees and utility poles. Gov. Andy Beshear said the death toll rose to 35, and hundreds of others remain unaccounted for.

(AP) — California officials say two bodies were found inside a charred vehicle in a driveway in the wildfire zone of a raging blaze that is among several menacing thousands of homes in the western U.S. Hot gusty weather and the possibility of thunderstorms threatened to boost the danger that the fires will keep growing.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture is proposing new regulations that would force food processors to reduce the number of salmonella bacteria found in some raw chicken products or risk shutdowns. The proposed USDA rules announced Monday would declare salmonella an adulterant — a contaminant that can cause foodborne illness — in breaded and stuffed raw chicken products.

WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) — A cultural center known for chronicling Appalachian life is cleaning up and assessing its losses. Like much of its stricken region, Appalshop has been swamped by historic flooding. The water inundated downtown Whitesburg in southeastern Kentucky, causing extensive damage to the renowned repository of Appalachian history and culture. Some losses are likely permanent after raging waters soaked or swept away some of Appalshop’s treasure trove of historic material.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 for the second straight day, in what appears to be a rare case of “rebound” following treatment with an anti-viral drug. White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor says in a letter Sunday that the president “continues to feel well” and will keep on working from the executive residence.

HINDMAN, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear says damage to critical infrastructure is hampering efforts to help residents hit by massive flooding. Beshear said Sunday that dozens of bridges were destroyed in last week's floods. That makes it difficult to assist many areas, including those whose water systems were damaged. The governor says communications issues also exist.

YREKA, Calif. (AP) — Crews battling the largest wildfire so far this year in California braced for thunderstorms and hot, windy conditions that created the potential for more fire growth as they sought to protect remote communities. The McKinney Fire was burning out of control in Northern California’s Klamath National Forest, with thunderstorms a major concern on Sunday.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana state senators narrowly passed a near-total abortion ban Saturday during a rare weekend session, sending the bill to the House after a contentious week of arguments over whether to allow exceptions for rape and incest.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 again Saturday, slightly more than three days after he was cleared to exit coronavirus isolation, the White House said. White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor said Biden “has experienced no reemergence of symptoms, and continues to feel quite well.” O'Connor said “there is no reason to reinitiate treatment at this time.”
